7 Signs Your Bathroom Needs a Renovation
Bathrooms take a daily beating — steam, humidity, and constant use eventually catch up with even well-built rooms. In Calgary's dry winters and humid summer spikes, that wear shows up faster than most homeowners expect. Here's how to tell when a repair won't cut it and it's time for a full renovation.
1. Tile is cracked, loose, or grout is crumbling
A single cracked tile can usually be patched. But if grout lines are crumbling throughout the room or tiles sound hollow when tapped, water has likely gotten underneath — and that's a waterproofing problem, not a cosmetic one.
2. Persistent mold or mildew you can't clean away
Surface mildew on grout is normal and cleanable. Recurring dark staining that comes back within days of cleaning usually means moisture is trapped behind tile, drywall, or subfloor — a sign the bathroom needs to be opened up and re-waterproofed.
3. Fixtures and finishes are decades out of date
Beyond style, older fixtures are often less water-efficient and more prone to leaks. Replacing worn faucets, toilets, and vanities during a renovation is usually more cost-effective than fixing them one at a time.
4. Poor or non-existent ventilation
If your bathroom doesn't have a working exhaust fan — or the fan is undersized for the room — humidity has nowhere to go. That accelerates mold growth and damages paint, drywall, and cabinetry over time.
5. Water pressure and drainage issues
Slow drains and weak pressure are sometimes a simple fix, but in older homes they can point to aging galvanized pipe that's corroding from the inside. A renovation is the right time to replace it.
6. The layout doesn't work for your household anymore
A growing family, an aging parent moving in, or simply wanting a walk-in shower instead of a tub-shower combo are all valid reasons to renovate — even if nothing is technically broken.
7. You're planning to sell
Bathrooms are one of the highest-return renovation projects for resale. An updated bathroom can meaningfully change a buyer's first impression of the whole home.
